Lake County Farm Bureau & Purdue Extension

Lake County cosponsored the annual Ag Awareness days where over a two day period about 1200 third graders get up close and personal with farm animals. Most of these children have never been on a farm and this is a great opportunity to learn about where their food comes from. They visit 15 different stations and spend 8 minutes at each stop. They learn about beef, dairy, swine, soil conservation, horses, goats, sheep, rabbits, antique tools, modern farm equipment, poultry, bees, grains, gardening, and 4-H. Teachers receive packets of information when they leave to use as follow ups with their classes. Everyone gets popcorn and chips when they leave. Many, many volunteers make this day unforgettable for these kids.
